Varieties
Ryegrass
– Perennial Ryegrass
Perennial ryegrass is used for longer term pastures producing high quality and high yields. Differing maturities are suited to differing climates.
– Annual Ryegrass
Annual ryegrasses complete their lifecycle in one year but produce bulk, quality feed in that time. Different cultivars have differing maturities which suits them to specific climates.
– Italian Ryegrass
Italian ryegrasses have the ability to produce feed over two years where the climatic conditions and management are favourable. Late maturing varieties can provide feed much later into the season than annual ryegrass and are therefore suited to areas with higher rainfall.
Perennial grasses
Other perennial grasses include a number of different species such as Tall Fescue, Cockfoot and Phalaris. These species are used for long term pastures and are very persistent under varying conditions when accompanied with good management.
– Phalaris
– Tall Fescue
Forage Crops
Forage crops are an annual crop used to fill feed gaps through the season. Cereals are primarily used to fill winter feed gaps – producing bulk feed in early winter and spring. Whilst forage brassica is typically sown in late spring/early summer to provide feed over the summer months.
– Forage Cereals
Forage cereals are an annual crop used to fill feed gaps primarily in winter. Cereals produce bulk feed in early winter and spring, but can also be cut for silage and hay later in the season.
– Forage Brassica
Forage brassicas are a valuable feed option in the summer months but can also be sown in autumn to fill winter feed gaps. Brassicas are also regularly used as crop rotations for disease management and weed control especially during pasture renovation phases.
